This sunroom—part of an overall home renovation, was specifically designed to enhance natural light and expand views throughout the home.

Starting with the roof structure and brick floor of an existing screened porch, this sunroom retrofitting was to house the Owner's grand piano and collection of books and small collectibles. Additional space for these functions was to be sensitively added onto the porch.

Proper climate control was accomplished by installation of a heating and cooling unit in the tight existing ceiling plenum. The traditional scale and feel was provided by the use of stop-fluted pilaster trim, and provision of smaller-scale fenestration and details. True divided lite windows were used, with care taken to match the size of the transom and double-hung lites. Although the millwork and detailing is substantial, through careful alignment and well-crafted joinery, it remained subtle.

Designed by Doug Bowman with Landscape Architect Preston Dalrymple, this remodeling project originated from a desire to improve the rear yard and outdoor living/entertaining spaces of this painted brick ranch home.

To that end, a new outdoor living room was created, including wood columns, heavy cornice lines, and sky-blue wood volume ceiling. The patterned bluestone floor was continued in a connecting loggia, and spills out onto a random patterned terrace and walkway.

The outdoor spaces are connected to the interior by means of a sunny breakfast room and remodeled kitchen.

All of these spaces were designed with light, wood trim and topped with Buckingham Slate and standing-seam copper roofing. The construction of a view-directing serpentine brick seat wall and privacy screening completes the landscape composition around a re-graded yard and renovated gardens.
